Science in the Family describes the artist’s early exposure to scientific ideas and information from her working class father as he broke with the fundamentalism of his childhood and began to develop a "scientific view of life." The portfolio includes a unique frontispiece, a framing essay and six folded sheets, each containing a handcolored etching accompanied by citations from scientists as well as poems and short prose pieces by the artist. These are organized around scientific topics and/or principles: the revolving of the earth around the sun; the exchange of gases in the air; electricity; DNA; the properties of water; and human evolution.
These verbal and visual aspects of the book highlight scientific topics even as they unfold the complexity of family dynamics and disclose how learning may be tied to love.
